Summary of “How Yogyakarta preserve discrimination”
The editorial news entitled “How Yogyakarta preserve discrimination” is tell about the prohibition of Chinese-Indonesians to claim or register their land in Sultanate City Yogyakarta based on the government regulation. The government verdict was break the spirit of 1998 reforms which contain equality in all difference back ground. Furthermore according to Law No.13/2012 that acts is inappropriate to equality value in Indonesia. It would be take an effect for Chinese-Indonesians people due to it is discrimination for them. The government could not keep the verdict to be run away because they had their own right on this land.
Tan, as Yogyakarta citizen had been saving money to buy 150 square meter land to build a small house for his family. But when he visiting National Land Agency (BPN) he got a refused from the staff. Tan cannot register his land. He was even more shocked when the staff explained about the status of his land is not an ownership but just “right to use” since 1975. The instruction forbids him from owning land in Yogyakarta.
Handoko as Chinese-Indonesians lawyers was inspired by the first generation of legal scholar Muhamad Yamin to keep respecting the legal rights of citizen equally. In 2015, he was supported the innocent people at the supreme court against the instruction, but the result is same. As the conclusion, nowadays in Yogyakarta there is live by approximately 20.000 Chinese-
Indonesians. But 1 in 10 claims to take their rights back by the unequal treatment under 1975 instruction.
